As a simple activity to enhance student understanding of the Syria crisis, the teacher could:
a. Start the class by posing the question: Should the international community take military action against Syria?
b. 5 min writing/brainstorm - List preliminary student ideas on board (both yes/no) (Goal: Gauge current level of student knowledge on the issue)
c. Question: What do we need to know before deciding yes/no on intervention?
-List questions on the board with the class' support:
1. What proof is there that the Assad regime used chemical weapons to attack civilians?
2. What is the position of neighbouring countries?
3. What would be the potential impact of military strike on civilians, businesses, etc?
4. What would the potential backlash be from Assad/Syria's allies (i.e. Russia, Iran)
5. What would be the nature of the intervention?
d. Divide students into 4-5 groups (of 4-5 students each), and students must research and respond to ONE of the questions brainstormed (must have access to internet/laptop - or bring bring articles to class)
e. Students present on their group's research question
f. Based on new findings, engage class in further discussion on topic. Extension/homework = write a op-ed or video tape a Speakers Corner segment giving your informed opinion on the crisis and the best course of action
