why i teach
I believe that the purpose of education is to provide youth with knowledge, skills and competencies that will help them become healthy, capable, thoughtful, contributing members of society as well as caring and empathetic individuals.
Teachers should act as guides and facilitators who create opportunities for learning and mentor students as they learn, and provide guidance and feedback along the way. They should also capture imaginations and release passions for learning and serving, as well as help to discover student's individual gifts and talents. Furthermore, I believe that teachers should be life-long learners and should act as models for their students.
I teach because I believe in the transformative power of education. I believe I can make a difference in students’ lives by encouraging them to challenge themselves, fostering respect and empathy, raising self-esteem, demonstrating social justice, and teaching them relevant skills that they can use in the present and in their future lives.

who I teach
I approach all learners as individuals with diverse backgrounds, who come to class equipped with varied knowledge, skills and interests. I feel that using and appreciating students’ outside interests and knowledge in the classroom is important in engaging students and creating an authentic classroom community. I attempt to reach all learners in my classes by involving the students in their own educational decisions and curriculum. Each student is given opportunities to share their expertise and to work on what challenges them with a wide variety of activities and learning styles.
How and what I teach
I believe that students learn best when...
My beliefs about how students learn shape my pedagogy and how I will teach in the future. I will aim all my teaching strategies and activities towards creating the conditions that optimize students’ learning abilities.
My goal for students is that they leave my classes with a greater sense of the world, an increased capacity for critical thought, a growing curiosity and a feeling of accomplishment and self-worth.
- they are in an environment of respect and encouragement.
- they have purpose and choice in their educational goals.
- they collaborate with each other.
- subject matter and skills are linked to big ideas and questions.
- they are given a variety of methods and techniques for learning.
- they are given meaningful feedback.
- educational activities and strategies respect and build on students' prior knowledge and beliefs.
